Camellias are great for foundation shrubs, specimen plants, hedges, warm winter gardens, patio containers or they can even be grown indoors. Camellias perform best in partial shade or shelter from afternoon hot sun and they’re popular in the south. They need a well-drained area with a slightly acidic soil and they do not tolerate wet feet. They respond well to an acid fertilizer in springtime. Prune after blooming has ended in Autumn to thin out growth and shorten lower branches to encourage an upright appearance. Cut back the top growth to ensure a thick, bushy plant.
